The Sandia Vista Elementary Montessori program will hold an informational meeting on February 1 at 5:30 p.m. in the school library, 6800 Franklin Rd. NE.  This meeting is for prospective Montessori preschool and kindergarten students only.   Parents must attend to obtain an application.

Through the state’s Open Enrollment Act, the Montessori program accepts students throughout the Rio Rancho district and from outside the district on a space-available basMontessori studentsis.  Parents of students who reside outside the Sandia Vista Elementary attendance boundary must provide their own transportation.

The Sandia Vista Montessori program, begun by RRPS in 2009, is one of a handful of public school-based Montessori programs in the nation.  It offers a child-centered, alternative method of teaching based on theories of child development originated by Italian educator Maria Montessori (1870-1952).  The Montessori method places children into a carefully-structured, multi-age-level classroom environment which gives them the opportunity to learMontessori students doing mathn at their own pace and in their own way through discovery and experimentation. Teachers are specially trained to work with students in the Montessori environment.

Students in the program are expected to learn the same material in the core subjects expected of all other Rio Rancho students, but may learn the material in a different way.  They are required to take the standardized tests required by the state.
